there is a difference between multi level sales/marketing and a pyramid. with multi level, everyone make money from the bottom up, but the higher you go (more people under you) the more you make.

a pyramid only the person on the very top gets paid, you get nothing for you investment until you reach the top (which you never do unless you are the that started the pyramid)

They are illegal. Those “companies” operate outside of the United States where US courts have no juristiction.

Well to answer your question, please read the explanation on this website -

Pyramid schemes has been banned long ago. It consider illegal in many countries.
However amway has been in business for 40 years, and it consider the oldest network marketing company.

But amway is in it slow growth and their compensation scheme, make it difficult to make money.

I am in network marketing too. However I joined the best compensation plan network marketing company.

Many people has negative experience in network marketing, online business because simply they join the wrong company, the wrong compensation plan, lousy upline.

Network marketing or home based business is not a get to quick rich scheme, it take 3 to 5 year to build. It take expertise to master the trade.
