In any kind of sales you need to get over your fear of rejection. If you can’t then sales is not the job for you.

I would stay away from MLM Schemes, most are scams

Hello Patrick,
If you want to start a home based business, there will be fees involved and business expenses. There are many legit business opportunities out there in direct sales, multi-level and network marketing. There are great companies to work with, but having a business isn’t for everyone. It’s worked real well for us. I now work this full-time and my wife works it part-time. This job can be done over the Internet, over the phone, or in person and is LEGIT !!! F/T, P/T, Free Training, Low Investment, No Inventory, No Sales.
If you’re serious about being your own boss, making an honest income commensurate with the effort you put forth.
I own my own home business but because of the rules here I am not able to give you the website. If you are interested in knowing more about it, click the link in my profile.

Hi Patrick,

That great thing about the Internet is that it has brought many MLM opportunities online and many of these companies are promoted 100% online without having to talk to anybody!

There are so many opportunities you can join that come with almost automated sales systems that do all the talking and follow up work for you.

I consider myself a pretty shy person also and I gave MLM a shot with an offline company when I first started and I could not bring myself to try and recruit someone.

The I discovered the world of Internet network marketing and that changed everything for me.

Check out this website over at and see a real automated follow up system in progress and also learn advanced Internet marketing secrets you can use to promote MLM online to others without having to even pick up a phone.

You can also get this free system which will setup a fully automated blog customized to your personality and generate lots of business leads for free over at

One more thing to know is that rejection is part of MLM, but don’t let it get you down. Not everyone is going to be interested in your business. You only need to worry about prospects that are hungry and will take action. These are the people who will grow your business more.

I agree with most of the answers except the one that said, “No you should never…”

I have a blog that is in my sig where I talk about it and how I too am a bit of an introvert.

Hope this helps.

Hi! I don’t know if you already have a company in mind, however, in my opinion, it all depends on the kind of company it is. I know that in our MLM company, introverts have been some of the most successful in the industry. Ask yourself this question…can you hand someone a dvd? Can you hand someone a magazine? Can you direct someone to a website? Have them check it out and follow up? If you can do this, you can be successful in our company because you let the tools do the talking (which the company provides), along with help from team members.
I myself am an introvert, and I’ve been having success with this business.

In response to your comment about rejection — you have to remember-as much as we believe MLM is for everyone…b/c we see the opportunity — not everyone is for MLM? Make sense? You always have to remind yourself..anyone who doesn’t want to join the business is not rejecting you personally, they’re simply saying - no thanks to the opportunity, its not for me RIGHT NOW. Most people who join MLM companies is because the timing was right for them in their lives..they were in the “looking zone”. Some people who say “NO” today–in 6 months turn out to be a “yes”. By exposing the opportunity to friends and family you’re giving them a chance to be a part of your success. If they choose not to, in 6 months to a year from now when they see how successful you’ve become and they’ll be kicking themselves for not taking you up on your offer. Be confident in what you do and nothing can bring you down!! Our business has the introvert in mind!!

April S @ 3:45 pm

Don’t listen to people who say all mlm are schemes. I think people get into the home business industry thinking money is just going to shower on them with no effort on their part. In every business you are going to have to do work. You just have to find “work” you will enjoy doing. When you find that you won’t be so shy to tell others. I don’t take rejection well either. I understand that. But there is always going to be rejection somehow or another unfortunately. So now I just take it as a learning experience and blow it off. I’ve done a lot of searching and REsearching in this… and though it was hard i found something I enjoy. Email me if you would like some info. I would love to help!

ya know mate, MLM is loathed by the majority but in my humble opinion it’s a great way to create a lifetime of wealth and at the same time build strong relationships with people who end up as you future biz partners…

regardless of what kind of biz you join, keep one thing mind that once you arm yourself with cutting edge marketing knowledge, there will be no stopping you…

we all possess the skill to succeed, just have to take action…in other words, if you want to join a MLM biz or any other biz, first take the time to learn about your company, the products…and than educate yourself on how to market your biz & products to your target market aka the ppl who usually buy what you have to offer…

hope that helps…

Your fear of rejection may be more than just that. The best way to combat that fear is to learn proper marketing skills. It is far more productive to learn who your target market is made up of and how to position yourself in front of them.
I would recommend that you study the MLM industry more prior to getting involved. There are some great products in MLM and few that have great compensation plans. There are many ways to build business in MLM. It is important to find the path of least resistance and one that will meet your interests.
There are also many other direct sales opportunities that are not set up with a focus of recruiting.

Best Regards!

Momof4 @ 5:00 am

MLM or network marketing (difference being in network marketing you have the choice to only sale the product and or service on it’s own, or aquire business partners to help you sale the product and services. You make a percentage off their sales without it taking away from them. In MLM, you recruit people with purchasing the product and service and the primary focus is recruitment). Anyhow, either one can be an incredible experience for you, not just financially, but the personal growth as well. I used to be shy and a complete introvert. I was the type of person when being talked to would look at the ground sliding my feet around and twittling my fingers behind my back because I was nervouse. Now, since I got involved in network marketing and took my business and do it both ways, I’m not longer that shy little girl anymore. I’m a business women and look people straight in the eye when talking to them. I don’t get nervouse anymore at all. Plus both my husband and I are both only at home working our businesses around our children’s life. If you are shy, and while your learning the industry, start out with your warm market, people that you know before you go into the real business aspect of network marketing. The warm market is primarily only a tool used to teach you the industry, learn the products and services while your starting to build your business and earn an income. It’s only your base part of your business. It’s not the only thing about network marketing or MLM, warm market is the “base”.
A few things that you should take a look at before getting involved in any company. Im using what we looked for and the answers we’ve found to help guide you into checking if a business is right for you or not. I don’t know which company your looking into, so I’ll use mine as an example. Don’t go to blogs because they don’t distinguish if a business is legit, real or not or even if it’s a scam or not. Blogs are places that negative people go to only to vent their flustrations on something that did not work out for them. Usually these people are the ones who did not do what was needed to succeed in business because they didn’t put the time or effort needed to succeed, or do what other’s who “have” succeeded in that particular industry had advised them to do. They didn’t follow the advice thoughrly. Anyhow, these blogs people go and post all these negative things that are usually 80 percent false accusations. They can’t fess up to the fact of the real reason why they failed in business. Instead of standing up and admitting to what they really did or did not do, they try and pass the buck onto someone or something else to try and justify their failure. Basically to make them feel better and luer people away from what could of been a big time opportunity for them to do something with their lives. Others posting things are scams is based on what they’ve read or have been told by the people above mentioned. That’s what blogs are basically about. So when searching for a business for yourself, look for yourself, not anyone else’s. Talk to the people who are involved in the company “now” not then. The ones involved then and not now are failures that are only going to give you negative feed back, make up lies and accusations and take it away from you. Which isn’t right. You need to be a leader not a follower. If your a follower of negative impact, your going to fail! That’s not what you want to do. Businesses take time to build. The average time to build a business is anywhere from 2 to 5 years. Depending on how much work and effort you put into it. Most people quit under 2, because they gave up on what they could of had because the income wasn’t what they wanted it to be. Instead of working their business and acheive what they wanted in whatever time frame it took, they throw there hands up in the air and quit, or get too much negative feed back from others just out to destroy their dream, then they quit and turn around and go along with what everyone else says and call things a scam or a fake or whatever. Don’t let these people pull you into their lifestyle. They’re unhappy people who didn’t have what it took to succeed, not did they take the time and real effort into “building” a business.
People who call MLM’s pyramids,
If you think about it, the American business model is build the same way! Welcome to Corporate America! Get a peice of paper out. Take any corporation to use as an example. On the top of your paper, draw a circle. This circle represents the Owner or partnership owners, Then write two circles under that (President/ CEO) and the Vice President. Write a few more circles under that and you have corporate management positions. A few circles under that and you have store managers, a few circles under that and you have store department managers, a few circles under that and you have sales reps. People don’t realize that but unless it’s a one man show no hired help, no independent representatives, everyone works in a pyramid! They can slice dice it anyway they want, that is the basic business model of any business in corporate america! I tell people, “welcome to america!”
Here’s a few things to look into your business that your checking into:
1. how long have they been in business. If it’s under five years then it’s a little risky, however if the company does well (which is primarily based on the representatives work) then think about what it would be like if you were on the forefront of that. Every business has a beginning. You decide if you want to chance it, or play it safe and look into a business that’s got a track record to prove itself.
2. If you chose to find a business that has a track record, find one that’s been rated in Inc 500. Inc 500 rates the top 500 with the fastest growing revenue in a companies first five years. Inc 500 rated my company the 22nd fastest growing company.
3. Don’t pay any attention to Blogs, BBB. BBB is not a governement agency. Business pay money to be members. So even if they’re not a BBB member, does not mean they are not a legitament company. Looking at the BBB only shows that the company is licensed, and it’s another type of blog where people who were fired, or x representatives or conumers go to post negative things about the company. It’s pretty much bogus. Anyone can be a satasfactory member, alls you have to do is pay for the membership fee and then your a satasfactory member.
4. Does the company your looking at have a physical address you can go to? Where are their head quarters?
5. Is the product and service in high demand? What I mean by that is for example, the product and services I sale in my home based businesses is things people use every day and pay for anyway. Everything to do with telecommunications, land lines, video phones, digital phones, voip, satellite tv and all major cellular phones and plans as well. People are going to be using these services and products every day pretty much no matter what. You don’t have to wait for the refills. I make a percentage month after month off everyone’s billings. (one way I get paid through this industry). So that’s what I mean by high demand and payment. Not having to wait. It’s giong to be used every month and paid for every month.
So many different things to look into (on your own for an unbiased and educated decision) You can’t make an educated decision on what you want to do based on others. Just look at the facts, ask questions, learn the industry, see if they have training available etc before getting involved in any business. If you need more information, I think I’m out of room here with my book, LOL feel free to email me at

Good Luck!

I disagree with some of the comments that have been made. I think that the answer lies within yourself. To find the right answer on your own, it is a must to do research. Research must be done outside of a business opportunity. I am not going to lure you away from MLM because of my own feelings. I would just like to encourage you to review the industry prior to making a choice. I would say that your shyness has little to do with your decision. Like you have said you don’t mind selling. You might find your place in MLM if you are willing to realize the focus on recruiting. There are opportunities in sales without recruitment. The industry of direct sales is a great example.

If you would like some great study, visit
Even skeptics have great advice and it is your decision if they are warranted.http://www.mlmwatch.org/

You can even do your own study through the federal trade commission. Just visit their site and enter in MLM or network marketing. Even a company name.

I’m in the same industry as mom of 4 is in. What she says about blogs and reports is completely correct. There is a huge difference in MLM and network marketing. What company are you looking into? It might not actually be an MLM. Many people confuse MLM companies and network marketing companies.
In the industry that we are in, you don’t have to recruit. However in aquiring customers or in any business you decide to get involved in, your going to have to get over rejection. Your going to be rejected all the time, even outside of business. Don’t mean to sound cruel, but it’s time to **** it up, be a man and learn to take rejection. There’s always a time in someone’s life where they’re going to be rejected. Learn to brush it off your shoulders. We have a saying in our organization, some will some won’t so what NEXT! If you want to build a successful business, then your going to have to learn that when you get a no, to say to yourself, “so what.” Are you going to let that one person ruin your life? If you look at it as the same concept of going next door and asking your neighbor for a cup of sugar, they say no (most likely because they ran out themselves) are you going to break down at their door step throwing a tantrum because you got rejected on the bowl of sugar? It’s not like they rejected saving your life with a kidney transplant. So they say no, who cares, move on. The point is, people say no for a variety of different reasons. Don’t take no’s personally. It just means it’s not for them, or they can’t right now (maybe later) or something to that effect. Focus on customers until you get enough courage to stand up and go for what you want.
I hope this helps. Again, not trying to be cruel, but only trying to help.

My opinion would be a strong no. Your message has come across clear.

Whether some will debate there is a difference between MLM and network marketing, they are one in the same. Both encourage recruiting strongly. Many compensation plans show that much of your commission is based on your level acquired through recruiting. If you do not recruit your business will suffer.

In sales it is necessary to persuade. If you are not comfortable with persuading people into a biz opp. I suggest that you look into more positive forms of the sales profession.

There are more great examples of why not to get into MLM though others answers. You can see the defense from reps who are either not making what they claim to others or they do not mind persuading people into a business model with a 97% failure rate.

I don’t know of anyone who actually likes rejection so I can see where you’d be coming from.

What I’m going to suggest is that you take a look at my profile to see what I do and if you think you might be interested, feel free to contact me as I’d be happy to help you.

You are not alone, no one else likes to persuade other people to join their business either, so when you can take that part out of the equation you have found real MLM success.

It comes when you have these essential 4 things taken care of.

1. My MLM Prospecting: I use SiteBuildIt to create my websites. There is nothing better.

2. For getting MLM Referrals: An online/offline support tool for getting referrals for network marketers. This suits people from all companies. You also need to effectively follow-up with customers, prospects and distributors. And the most effective (and efficient) follow-up method for ANY business (but particularly MLM) is sending postcards and greeting cards. This one thing does it all. Need proof? - Take a free trial and you will see what I mean.

3. My Online Follow-up: Online follow up and the sequencing of timely reminders to stay on top of your relationship building strategies is handled by Oprius. You can take a free trial of this system here.

4. MLM Training: All handled in the Renegade Network Marketer. Don’t attempt modern day InterNet-work MARKETING without this essential training.

All sown up in a neat bundle, and for my new downlines struggling with the prospecting aspect, we have plenty of qualified leads for them to get started on, because we know what we are doing. Does your upline know how to train and support you? The best time to begin learning to do your prospecting is when you have already got a healthy cash flow and the pressure is off.

One of the most off-putting things when trying to build a network marketing business is being rejected by family and friends. Imagine, then, being able to avoid even asking them to join you in the first place.

The Mentoring for Free program trains you for free in not selling, not recruiting and not even mentioning your business to family and friends. You will be shown how to get people to come to you to join your business.

That’s not all. The program will train all your people in your downline for free also!

It’s all to do with building relationships.

NPO @ 3:50 am

Take it the same way as you would in selling your products and services. If they say no, so what? Offer them the opportunity, if they say no, move on. Plain and simple. Your simply just giving people the opportunity to make money. Look at it the same way as you offering them a candy bar. It’s a good treat right? They may not want it, they say no thank you, so you enjoy the candy bar and move on to the next subject. You know what I mean?
You can do very well in MLM, you just have to learn your industry and pay no attention to others who are not involved with what they say. It’s your life, not there’s be above that.

I agree with momof4 and someone else, there is a big difference between MLM and Network Marketing. The concept is similiar, but very different.
Good Luck!
